Cabo Matapalo is one of the most interesting places to explore near Puerto Jiménez. In this experience we combine birdwatching, tropical forest, coastal scenery, and a visit to a waterfall. The day starts early with the transfer from Puerto Jiménez to Matapalo, followed by a birdwatching hike through different habitats — pastureland, gallery forest, understory, secondary forest, and areas near the coast. This variety of ecosystems increases the chances of finding different species and lets you see how wildlife changes from one habitat to the next. Una vez allí, comenzaremos con una caminata de observación de aves por diferentes ambientes: pastizal, bosque de galería, sotobosque, bosque secundario y sectores cercanos a la costa. Esta variedad de ecosistemas aumenta las posibilidades de encontrar diferentes especies y permite observar cómo cambia la vida silvestre de un ambiente a otro. Además de las aves, tendremos la oportunidad de disfrutar del paisaje, el bosque y los atractivos naturales de Cabo Matapalo.
If your main interest is birdwatching, this experience is designed specifically for you. We depart early from Puerto Jiménez toward Cabo Matapalo. On arrival, our guide gives a short briefing before we start the hike with spotting scope and field guides ready to identify whatever we come across. Along the way we move through different habitats searching for tropical birds. The goal isn't just to walk through the forest, but to stop, listen, observe, and learn to identify species by their features, behavior, and calls. A great experience for birdwatchers, photographers, and travelers interested in Costa Rica's biodiversity.Si tu principal interés es la observación de aves, esta experiencia está diseñada especialmente para vos. Salimos temprano desde Puerto Jiménez en dirección a Cabo Matapalo. Al llegar, nuestro guía realizará una breve explicación sobre la actividad y comenzaremos la caminata con telescopio y guías de campo preparados para identificar las especies que encontremos. Durante la caminata recorreremos diferentes ambientes en busca de aves tropicales. El objetivo no es simplemente caminar por el bosque, sino detenernos, escuchar, observar y aprender a identificar las especies por sus características, comportamiento y sonidos. Es una excelente experiencia para birdwatchers, fotógrafos y viajeros interesados en la biodiversidad de Costa Rica.
When night falls, the forest of the Osa Peninsula changes completely. At 5:40 PM we depart from Puerto Jiménez toward Río Nuevo. After a short briefing from our guide and equipped with flashlights, we start a night hike through the forest, learning to search for animals that are rarely seen during the day — bats, kinkajous, opossums, frogs and toads, along with snakes, arachnids, and insects. The sounds of the forest are part of the experience too: the calls of frogs and toads and the activity of nocturnal birds create an atmosphere completely different from a daytime hike. The darkness forces you to slow down and pay closer attention — every sound, movement, or reflection can reveal a new species.Cuando cae la noche, el bosque de la Península de Osa cambia completamente. A las 5:40 PM salimos desde Puerto Jiménez hacia Río Nuevo. Después de una breve explicación de nuestro guía y equipados con linternas, comenzamos una caminata nocturna por el bosque. Durante el recorrido aprenderemos a buscar animales que rara vez se observan durante el día: murciélagos, kinkajús, zarigüeyas, ranas y sapos, además de serpientes, arácnidos e insectos. Los sonidos del bosque también forman parte de la experiencia — el canto de las ranas y sapos y la actividad de las aves nocturnas crean un ambiente completamente diferente al de una caminata durante el día. La oscuridad obliga a caminar más despacio y observar con atención: cada sonido, movimiento o reflejo puede revelar una nueva especie.
